"I thought it best and I prefer to sit in my house if the Nationals do not show more appreciation for my work. Appreciate my work means to increase the value of the contract and guarantee it. I will not accept any minor league contracts with no safeguards. I instructed my agent to report my position to the Nationals." (Odalis Perez, via ESPN dot com, 2/16/2009)
Because, we all want to be appreciated for our work.
Hold Out! Odalis Perez wants the Nats to appreciate his work...
...meaning, add some $$$ to that dumb deal he signed and and guarantee him a job (and not a minor league one).
Guess he missed Manny Acta's thoughtful comments about just being glad to have a job in this economy.
Meanwhile, the Odalis Cowboy has a little lingering problem of the contract he signed, at least, that's what Jim Bowden told The Associated Press:
"The agreement has been signed...We expect Odalis to honor his agreement with the club."
If what Jimbo is saying is true, then it's pretty simple, and it works like this: either Odalis shows up to camp, or he don't get paid in '09. How's that for appreciation?
But in Odalis Perez's world, all he has to do is "show everybody" that he's in "great shape", and he'll find a team that values him. Memo to Odalis: Love you, babe, but we're fairly certain that you signed a contract with THE team that values you. Good luck with your plan, though:
"I will play in the World Classic for the Dominican Republic and show everybody that I'm in great shape," Perez said. "I hope to find a team that values me, otherwise I'll go home." (via ESPN.com)

I prefer to sit in my house if the Nationals do not show more appreciation for my work. Work is another word for mediocre pitching, which makes me the Ace around here.

I can't believe you're the ace now. I miss being the superhero.
