Wil Nieves wants you to know it isn't necessary to go out and find another catcher for defensive purposes for next season. He and Josh Bard are handling ball-blocking duties just fine, thank you very much. Via Nationals dot com:
'If you look at the games, count how many balls the pitchers throw in the dirt," Nieves said. "We block balls. I've had games where I blocked 10 to 15 balls. We have more opportunities to miss the ball because so many balls have been thrown in the dirt."
In other words, Mike, Wil is telling you to go out and spend Ted Lerner's money on guys who can find the strike zone.
