"This is a team I grew up on -- the Washington Senators. To me, it's still the Nationals/Senators. It's all the same as Washington baseball."
(Jim Riggleman, via Nationals dot com, 11/12/2009)
God help us. Sadly, this team often does resemble the team Jim Riggleman grew up watching.
"He did a masterful job in very trying circumstances [in 2009] ... We did an extensive search and came back to the realization that the best candidate was in-house."
(Mike Rizzo, via Nationals Journal, 11/12/2009)
Meet The New Boss...
Same as the old boss; minus the "Interim" tag.
Mike Rizzo gets his man.
Maybe the most interesting sidebar to the hiring is the air of secrecy around the details of the deal. So, how many years? How many dollars? Don't ask. Mark Zuckerman reports in Chatter that Riggles and his agent, Burton Rocks, signed confidentiality agreements. Is this typical? via Chatter:
Terms of his deal were not disclosed -- in fact, the Nats asked Riggleman and his agent, Burton Rocks, to sign confidentiality agreements promising not to reveal details -- but it is a multi-year contract. Or, as Rocks put it: "Jim's going to be manager of the Washington Nationals for a long time."
But stay tuned to Jim Bowden's Twitter feed; certainly someone within the Nationals organization (*cough* *cough* Mark Lerner *cough*?) will leak the details to Jimbo soon enough, and Jimbo will Tweet about it.
Meanwhile...
Congrats to Zim on that Silver Slugger Award. Silver and Gold, has a nice ring to it.

Isn't the bigger story here that Jim Riggleman's agent is named Burton Rocks?

Yes! In fact, it's the second most interesting aspect of the Riggleman hiring (first being the confidentiality agreement). The name "Burton Rocks" sounds more fitting for a UFC fighter or 80's po rn star, no?
