(AP Photo. Is a John Smoltz/Stan Kasten reunion in the cards?)
Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports reported earlier today that the Nats are interested in John Smoltz. Not surprising, given the Kasten connection. What is surprising is that apparently, the feeling is mutual, according to one of Rosenthal's sources with knowledge of the discussions:
"There is mutual sincere interest," said one source with knowledge of the discussions.
According to our own anonymous sources with no knowledge of the situation, Rosenthal's unnamed source with knowledge of the discussions is not the same unnamed source with knowledge of the discussions who prematurely leaked the "Manny Acta is about to be fired" story last June.
Anyway, 2009 was a tale of two cities for Smoltz. His 8 game stint in Boston -- which included his debut June 25th against the Nationalswhere he got roughed up early but settled down and lasted 5, only to take the loss against some kid named Zimmermann -- was a disaster. His 7 game stop in St. Louis was more of a mixed bag, but featured an August 28th duel at Nationals Park in which he beat John Lannan in arguably his best start of the season.
Bud does Smoltz has anything left in the tank? Is a potentially washed up Smoltz the right veteran to bring to Washington in 2010 to head up the rotation and serve as a mentor for the young staff? As long as Smoltz wouldn't be the only addition to the rotation, we're on board.

Maybe as soon as Smoltz finds a contender to sign with instead?
