Bryce Harper reported to spring training with the Nationals on February 21. Then he nearly got killed by the crush of autograph hounds.
167 days and a comparison to Bieber Fever, a mustache, a Twitter account for his mustache, a first home run, a first grand slam, lots of heckling, chicken sandwiches, an 18-game hit streak, a blown kiss, a monster truck, assorted bombs and a walk-off, an ejection, etc., and Bryce Harper's first minor league season is effectively in the books thanks to a strained hammy. Here's video of Harper being carried off the field Thursday night. Harper to the seven day DL. Here's Davey:
"I'm not going to worry a whole lot about Bryce Harper down there with a slight pulled hammy. It's the end of the season. He probably won't play the rest of the year. You are not taking a chance aggravating it where it becomes a more serious injury." (Davey Johnson, via MLB.com, 8/19/2011)
Right. Not too shabby for The Kid's first season of pro ball. Next stop for Harper: Arizona Fall League.
