"I really hate for it to come on [Zimmermann], Zimm pitched a gem. It was hot out there and he gave a jewel out there, a heck of a game. It was one of the few times the bullpen hadn’t done a good job."*
(Davey Johnson, via Nats Insider, 7/8/2012)
Rockies 4, Nationals 3: Jordan Zimmermann pitched a gem AND a jewel. But a pair of wild pitches in 8th and 9th by Mike Gonzalez and Tyler Clippard canceled out the W, gem, jewel, and yet another quality Z-NN start.
What's more shocking: that the Nats lost a series? Or that Henry Rodriguez wasn't involved in a loss involving 2 crucial wild pitches?
Still: First place in the NL East? Best record in the NL? Pinch me.
That oblique must really be killing him: Just 2-4, HR, 2 SB, 2 RBI for Ian Desmond.
Ho-hum, just two more hits for Mike Morse. He's starting to heat up just in time for the 2nd half, folks...
*With the exception of all those Henry Rodriguez moments.
