File under: #Mattitude?
And so, even Ian Desmond couldn't figure out why Matt Williams didn't pinch run for Adam LaRoche in the 9th inning with one out representing the tying run in a 2-1 game. Enjoy the Vines (via MASN/MLB.TV and CSN Philly) above, in which lip readers can clearly make out Desmond asking "Do you want to pinch run?"...and not looking so happy when Williams told him "No". And then there was the Philly feed, in which Desmond flashes the international sign for "pinch runner" with his fingers:
Didn't matter anyway - Williams eventually brought out Danny Espinosa with two outs after a Bryce Harper strikeout. And then new guy Asdrubal Cabrera struck out to end the game. Nats lose 2-1. So now we have Bryce Harper questioning Matt Williams lineup construction; and Ian Desmond questioning his manager's in-game tactics. What's next?
Why no pinch runner with one out?
Why no pinch runner for LaRoche: Phillies played no-doubles with one out, so he would have scored on any hit. With two outs, OFers moved in.— Adam Kilgore (@AdamKilgoreWP) August 2, 2014
