Wow. As reported in the Washington Times/Chatter, Nationals Journal, and Nationals dot com, John Patterson has been released by the Nationals.

Stunning news in some ways, but the biggest surprise to me is that they could get nothing for him in trade. Tells you how bad things really were, and how many others knew it.

That they couldn't trade him seems like the least surprising aspect of this whole thing, at least to me anyway. I have a hard time believing they even bothered trying to move him. It'll be interesting to see if any other teams take a flyer on him, or if he rejoins the organization through the minors.
