An eventful night for Bryce Harper in Charleston, WV last night. Above, video of Bryce Harper sparking the first benches-clearing incident of his professional career (jump ahead to around the 1:30 mark in the clip). In the first inning, Harper hit his fourth home run of the season. In the third inning, after striking out looking on a pitch by West Virginia Power starter Tyler Waldron, Harper can be seen taking off his batting helmet and gloves at the plate, then turning around and following Waldron back to the home dugout while the two players exchange words. Benches clear!
Here's a description of the events from the Hagerstown Suns' official website:
A strange play occurred in the top of the 3rd inning as CF Michael Taylor ripped a solo home run to right center field, but it was erased on a technicality as the Power appealed to base umpire, Roberto Ortiz saying that Taylor did not touch the first base bag. Waldron threw to first base and Taylor was called out, overturning the home run blast. Following the call, Suns skipper Brian Daubach was ejected from the game by home plate umpire Jose Esteras. Once the inning was concluded, both benches and bullpens cleared after Harper was called out on strikes and engaged in a war of words with Waldron. Order would be restored shortly after.
